Hello Marshall Street fam,
How are we?
I’m not great, and I’m assuming a lot of you out there aren’t either. See, it’s been a really damn shitty week. And I don’t want to talk about it. So I’m not going to. We have enough awful news on every social media platform, every newspaper and TV we look at, so I’m not going to do that to you here! This is a safe space!
What I am going to do is share with you a little playlist I have created for weeks like this. Where nothing goes right, and we can’t even play live music about it because all the gigs are cancelled.
I have aptly named the playlist: Happy songs for shitty weather. You can follow it here:
I love (pun intended) this piece of music. It’s electric, it has an amazing build and it’s easy to listen to. I feel like some people might find this track super annoying, but I’m about it. It makes me happy, maybe because it’s such a simple concept, sung over that infectious beat. Let me know in the comments what you think.
This Is On You – Maisie Peters
The world stopped when I discovered Maisie Peters. The pint-sized Brit is a songwriting genius, and her songs are catchy, slightly tongue in cheek and most definitely wise beyond her 19 years. She has such a lovely voice, that you can’t be sad when listening to it, and this song in particular gives the subject the finger, tells them “this is on you”, and does it in the sweetest possible way. I love to see it.
Hey Ya- Outkast
This has been one of my all time favourite songs since I was really little, and it never fails to put a smile on my face. It’s one of mine and dad’s, like, in-joke songs, and whenever it comes on when we’re in the same vicinity, we’ll find each other and do silly ‘dad’ dance moves to it. I’ve joked that at my wedding, this will be the father/daughter dance song. (I’m deadly serious). If you don’t like this song, I’m not sure you have a soul.
Medicine – Balu Brigada
My boyfriend, Sam, showed me this one. Good pick, Sam. These New Zealand brothers don’t spare a moment in finding the perfect hip hop/ pop blend, with the beat offering its own ecosystem of sounds, all popping and dancing around each other, creating a perfect harmony. This is one of the songs that is so easy and great to listen to, but when you listen closely you can hear how complex the production is.
Better in Blak – Thelma Plum
If you want to feel powerful in this time of absolute despair, listen to Better in Blak by Thelma Plum. If the lyrics “You took the power from me, now I’m taking it back” don’t make you feel better, the call-and-response “Fuck that!” definitely will.
King of Wishful Thinking – Go West
This is my guilty pleasure song. I’ve liked it since I was like, 12, and still, every time it comes on it’s just so happy and hilarious. Dance around your living room to it while you’re on lockdown, I promise you won’t stay sad.
Accidentally in Love – Counting Crows
IT’S FROM SHREK. NEED I SAY MORE.
Okay, I could honestly go on and on about every song on this playlist, but I won’t. It’s a happy playlist, and I promise it’ll make you feel better.
In the meantime, what are your happy songs? What should I add to the list? Let’s all share things that make us feel better in this time and most importantly, let’s all be there for each other. I’m always here if anyone wants to chat, drop into my DMs or leave a comment!
Sending love always,
